THE UNITED STATES: Chicago
Chicago's Civic Opera House is one of the most beautiful buildings in a city that prides itself on its architecture. Built in 1929, this ageless amalgam of Renaissance revival and Art Deco has superb acoustics, excellent sightlines and sumptuous public spaces, including a handsomely proportioned lobby designed by Jules Guerin. The theater was home to several Chicago opera companies before its most distinguished tenant, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, arrived in 1954. The Lyric established the City of Big Shoulders as an international opera capital, offering the opera world's brightest stars in top-notch productions. After the Lyric season ends in late winter, Chicago's opera lovers hold on until spring, when the adventurous Chicago Opera Theater presents its three-opera season at the slick new Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millenium Park.

SWEDEN
The Drottningholm Court Theatre
Built in 1766 for the Swedish queen, Lovisa Ulrika, the Drottningholm Court Theatre-located in the Royal Domain of Drottningholm, only a short bus or boat ride from the capital city of Stockhom-is a thing of exquisite artifice. The theatre was a beehive of musical and theatrical activity during the late eighteenth century, but when Lovisa Ulrika's son (and political enemy), King Gustaf III was assassinated-an event used as the basis for Verdi's opera Un Ballo in Maschera,-the theatre fell into disuse; it was a storage facility for much of the nineteenth century. Drottningholm was recalled to life in the 1920s and now presents a brief summer season each year, with the repertory usually drawn from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Spring and summer tours of the theater and the palace grounds are relatively infrequent, in order to spare its eighteenth-century charms from the wear-and-tear of twenty-first-century life. Early booking is advisable.

THE UNITED STATES: Santa Fe

About the photography workshop

Spain seeks Volunteer English Teachers

The Spanish Government seeks Volunteer Teachers for new English Language Education Project.

Vaughan Systems, in collaboration with the Spanish Government, offers English native speakers the chance to teach English for 2 months while living in the quaint Spanish countryside.
The government of Castile-Leon wants to enhance the English-learning process of pre-schoolers and early elementary school students, and they want to do it by bringing in native speakers from all corners of the world. Volunteers would help as teaching assistants and would see that the English language is alive and well in the classrooms of north central Spain.

Positions are available in various locations throughout the Castile-Leon area. This area of Spain is one of the most emblematic in the history of the country. It is the home of El Cid and it was the area that most promoted the reconquest of the Spain from the Moors.

What do you do?
The volunteer will do his or her best to be a fun, valuable asset for the school and for the young students in their efforts to start at an early age to gain a minimum ability with the English language. The curriculum in Spanish pre-schools and elementary schools is almost identical to what is found in primary education around the world. The student age groups would be approximately between 3 and 8 and classroom size between 25 and 35.

What do you get?
In exchange, the project covers housing and offers a small monthly stipend, insurance plus opportunities for occasional weekend excursions and activities. The maximum stay for the volunteer would be three months.

The program kicks off on April 13, 2009 and spaces are limited.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (eTN) - Reports from all over the East African Indian Ocean coastal towns showed that Italians love to have sex with African girls to an extent that some fly from Italy to East Africa on sex tourism mission.

Few days after an Italian chef was given persona non grata status by Tanzanian authorities over sexual offense, reports from Kenya said Italian tourists visiting the tourist beach towns of Malindi and Mombasa are champions of sex tourism.

An Italian chef was declared illegal immigrant in Tanzania’s island of Zanzibar after four girls from his kitchen testified to have had sex with him and have conceived.

A similar story was reported this week from Kenya where Italian tourists, most popular in beach holidays were found to be fond of having sex with Kenyan girls.

Parents in the Kenyan coastal towns of Malindi and Mombasa said the two towns are currently the leading destinations for child sex tourism in East Africa.

Through various media interviews, parents in Malindi, Watamu and Diani on the Kenyan Indian Ocean beaches said school girls have failed to attend schools in favor of sexual business with Italian tourists.

“When the girls see an Italian tourist, they even approach him and ask for money in exchange of sex. And when an Italian tourist approach those girls, they become happy and invite him to enjoy sex and pay them some money,” one parent was quoted saying.

More than 2,000 Italians have settled in Malindi, while tens of thousands visit the coast annually. In Tanzania, Italians are mostly settled on the coastal towns of Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia and Bagamoyo running tourist resorts.

Kenyan Tourism Minister Najib Balala said there was no way that the Kenyan government would kick out Italians from tourism business because they were among the best stakeholders in tourism and have contributed greatly to community social projects such as schools.

He said hoteliers must lead in the fight against child sex tourism, which has attracted a nasty coverage in the western media, particularly, the Italian press.

Findings showed that child sex tourism on the East African coast was driven by poverty which so far attracted them to practice commercial sex so as to supplement family earnings.

The secretary for Children Affairs in the Kenyan Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development, Jaqueline Oduol, said fifty percent of boys and girls involved in sex work were recruited or connected to tourists by beach boys, who also exploit them.

Unlike other nationalities, Italian tourists are more interested in beach holidays than wildlife photographic safaris. Big charter aircraft from Italy frequently land in the East African coastal towns on tourism missions.

Snow Sculpting is attended annually by more than 30,000 people of all ages from across America and the world and has ben named by USA Today as "one of the top 10 ways to celebrate winter." During the event, four-person teams are assigned 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of machine-made snow. These teams work within a five-day period to create sensational sculptures. From these blocks of snow, the teams often create enormous pieces of whimsy, although some deliver powerful political or social commentary. Some sculptures are even interactive and allow spectators to experience the tactile as well as visual grace of the fleeting exhibit (photos available upon request.)

As a writer, you probably read the stories about writers who are working from home and making six-figure salaries with envy, and wonder, "Why can't that be me? I must not be good enough to make that kind of money." I'm here to tell you that it's possible for anyone to build a very successful freelance writing career and earn a six-figure salary, while never leaving home.

The key is diversification and flexibility. You have to be able to diversify your talents and be flexible enough to apply them to a variety of different sub-fields within the broader writing category. While your passion may be fiction writing, you still need to put food on the table while you write your novel. It's still important to pursue what you're most passionate about, but being flexible enough to apply your talents in more profitable areas will allow you the freedom to pursue your ultimate dream. Are you flexible enough and motivated enough to use your talents in other areas that have the potential to make you lots of money?

There are endless possibilities of profitable areas you could pursue in your writing career. Networking and marketing yourself properly could land you freelance writing opportunities in blogging, writing e-books, ghostwriting, copywriting, resume writing, and more. Corporations are always in need of talented writers to write copy for their websites, for external communications, such as press releases, and even internal communications. While many companies utilize in-house staff for these tasks, most often it's a secondary job for a staff member who has no experience in writing other than what they've done for that company. It's your job to educate them on how outsourcing those tasks to a professional writer could net them greater results from their communication efforts.

There are two challenges most often faced by writers, and I have solutions for both. The first is that most writers are, by nature, not skilled in the areas of accounting and business management. I chose to outsource my back-office functions to a company called MBO Partners, which handles contracts, invoicing and collections. They also act as an employer of record, which means I get a single W-2 at the end of the year, simplifying my tax-management process. I still have control over my business, still market my own services and choose which clients I work for, but still am able to take advantage of all the tax deductions that come with owning a business.

The second challenge most often faced by freelance writers is the ability to market our own services. Typically writers have more introverted personalities, and most of us aren't comfortable tooting our own horn. Thanks to the internet, it's not necessary to have face-to-face interaction with potential clients in order to get new business. There are many indirect ways to attract customers that are highly effective, although it is still beneficial to fine-tune our sales skills and have the courage to make cold calls now and then. It's also still necessary to take initiative and submit proposals for potential work. Go to your potential customers with ideas and solutions; don't simply send an email saying, ?Hi, I'm a freelance writer, do you have any writing needs?" Make sure you do your research on your potential clients and think of how what you offer can improve their business. That's the information you need to convey when approaching a customer.

I have found that it's essential for any freelancer or independent consultant to have a web presence. Websites are much more affordable than they used to be, and if you have any tech savvy you might even be able to create your own. As a writer, you should also have a blog. This is a perfect opportunity to showcase your writing abilities, and gives you an easy place to point potential clients where they can get a feel for your style. It's also important to network using the internet. There are a ton of social networking sites that allow you to build a profile explaining your business and services. Get involved; participate in discussions and make contacts. Offering free advice is the best way to position yourself as an expert in a given field, and the best way to get clients coming to you without minimal effort on your part.

While all this may take some time, it's easy to see that anyone willing to diversify their skills and dedicate the time and effort to an effective marketing strategy can build a solid base of clients that could net them a significant income while working from home.

Time Out Dubai is looking for talented writers to contribute to our regular guides to Muscat, Bahrain and Doha. Our glossy magazines encompass features as well as comprehensive reviews and listings for each destination. We seek strong pitches for features that steer clear from the usual travel mag cliches. We are also looking for restaurant, bar and spa reviews from writers or gifted amateurs who know the destinations well.

Foodtrekker, a new online resource for culinary tourism worldwide, is looking for correspondent writers and photographers, specifically local experts ready to lead readers into a culture through its cuisine. Where do the locals go? They're not only looking for profiles of the most noteworthy restaurants and bars, they're eager to feature culinary tours and attractions, breweries and wineries, specialty food shops, cooking schools, farmers markets and more. They're also looking for photos both to accompany stories and to stand alone.
